Before you buy

Answers about models, set sizes and what you need to get started.

Buying full-body trackers for the first time? Here are answers to the most common questions.

Do I need base stations?

Not for Dawn Tracker. Connect the dedicated receiver and set up SlimeVR to get started.

If your headset or controllers already need base stations, keep using them as usual. Dawn Tracker itself needs no additional base stations.

Do I need Wi-Fi?

No! Trackers connect through the dedicated receiver. You do not need to enter a Wi-Fi name or password or configure each Tracker's network connection.

Which model should I choose?

  • Lite 2: A budget-friendly first setup, with Type-C charging.
  • Mini 2T: The slim Mini design at an accessible price.
  • Mini 2: Balanced features and price for everyday use.
  • Mini 2 Pro: A higher-spec choice for a larger budget.

Start with these recommendations even if you are unfamiliar with sensors. See Models and specifications for the full comparison.

Is 6-point tracking enough? What do 8 and 10 points add?

A 6-point set covers the chest, waist/hip and both legs for a basic body-tracking setup.

An 8-point set adds either both upper arms or both feet; a 10-point set includes both. Choose based on whether you want upper-arm motion or more detailed foot poses. See Wearing positions.

Do I have to own a VR headset?

For PC VRChat, you will use a headset and controllers. For VTubing or other motion-capture uses, SlimeVR can work with suitable software without limiting you to VR games.

Before buying, tell us which software, devices and connection method you plan to use so we can help confirm a suitable setup.

Which devices are supported? Can I connect directly to a headset?

Windows, macOS, Linux and Android/Quest are supported. You can also connect the receiver directly to a headset.

The basic flow is the same: install SlimeVR, connect the receiver, assign body parts, put on the Trackers and reset, then set up your application. Start with the Quick start guide.

Can I add more Trackers later?

Yes. Buy additional Trackers, pair them with your receiver and assign new body parts. A Mini receiver supports up to 16, and a Lite receiver up to 10.

Mini and Lite Trackers/receivers are not interchangeable. Check the specific combination if mixing other series or brands; contact us if you are unsure.

What is a magnetometer? Do I need one?

Think of it as a component that helps keep your direction stable and extends the interval between resets. Mini 2 and Mini 2 Pro have one; Mini 2T and Lite 2 do not.

You do not have to learn how to use it before buying. Choose based on budget and model positioning first, then read Using the magnetometer if you want to know more.

Is setup difficult?

For your first session, install the software, connect the receiver, assign body parts, put on the Trackers and reset. The Quick start guide walks you through it.

After setup, body-part assignments and body proportions can be saved. Next time you mainly need to put on the Trackers, connect and reset—not start from scratch.
